Most of us at some point in our lives will have had an imaginary friend. He/she/it would join in with the games we made up for solitary play. As we grew up the need for an imaginary friend lessened, before they went off to make new friends, just as we did.

Daniel is no exception to this. His first imaginary friend appeared two or three years ago, and went by the name of George. We thought it was interesting at the time to see him start to develop an imagination. He would play with George for extended periods of time in the house, or in the garden. We wondered if it was just a passing phase. No. Soon after, along came Alapeno. George and Alapeno would each take turns in playing with Daniel, or both would be involved in his games.
